چکیده

This paper presents performance test results of true-color night vision cameras. Such cameras are sensitive to the visible to near-infrared (VNIR) portion of the spectrum allowing for the “true-color” of scenes and objects to be displayed and recorded under low-light-level conditions. True-color refers to an approximate reproduction of the subjective colors that would be seen by the human eye in daylight conditions. Monochrome green or grayscale imagery from image-intensified I2CCD cameras has been the standard for years; however, as the technology progresses the added benefits that a true-color system enables (such as increased information content and better situational awareness) are beginning to outweigh the drawbacks. Two different prototype cameras, employing two different true-color night vision technological approaches, have been recently developed and tested. One camera uses a fast-switching liquid crystal filter in front of a custom Gen-III image intensified CMOS camera. The second camera is based around an EMCCD sensor with a mosaic filter applied directly to the detector. In addition to visible light, both cameras can utilize NIR to (1) increase the signal and (2) enable the viewing of laser aiming devices. The performance of these two cameras are reported and compared to a monochrome night vision camera in terms of resolution, image contrast, color reproduction fidelity, SNR, range, and other parameters. Figures of merit designed specifically for the objective assessment of such cameras are used in this analysis. Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited

True-Color Night Vision Cameras

This paper describes True-Color Night Vision cameras that are sensitive to the visible to near-infrared (V-NIR) portion of the spectrum allowing for the “true-color” of scenes and objects to be displayed and recorded under low-light-level conditions. As compared to traditional monochrome (gray or green) night vision imagery, color imagery has increased information content and has proven to enab...

Figures of Merit for True - Color Image - Intensified Cameras

Figures of Merit (FOMs) are presented that quantify the relative range, color-based contrast, and color fidelity of color image intensified (night vision) systems. These FOMs allow for objective comparisons of differing color camera systems and are particularly useful for designing and optimizing True-Color Image-Intensified (TC-I2) cameras and associated color mixing and image processing algor...

Night Vision Camera Fusion with Natural Colors Using a Spectral / Texture Based Material Identification Algorithm

Combining multiple types of night vision cameras, such as low-light-level visible to near infrared (VNIR), short-wave (SWIR), mid-wave (MWIR), and/or long-wave infrared (LWIR), enables the presentation of complimentary information into a single display. A great deal of developmental work has been devoted to maximizing the information in the fused imagery; however, fusion schemes that rely on so...

Matrox Imaging White Paper - Color Machine Vision

Digital cameras with color image sensors are now commonplace. The same is true for the computing power and device interfaces necessary to handle the additional data from color images. What’s more, as users become familiar and comfortable with machine vision technology, they seek to tackle more difficult or previously unsolvable applications. These circumstances combine to make color machine vis...

A New Scheme for Color Night Vision by Quaternion Neural Network

A neural network for extracting color information from gloomy images is presented in this paper. We adopt a feedforward quaternion neural network, where neuronal parameters are represented as 4-dimensional vectors. The network is trained by imposing a gloomy image as input and its finer one as target by quaternion version of back propagation algorithm, and then relations between them are establ...
